Interesting Lace Facts:

The similarity of laces was used in antiquity, but they gained popularity only at the beginning of the 20th century.

Archaeologists date the appearance of the first laces to the 13th century, when, during excavations, strings with a tiny metal tip were found next to shoes and clothes. At that time, they were used not only for lacing shoes, but also for clothes.

It is still unknown who invented the laces, but the date of their birth is known - on March 27, 1790, the first lace-shaped shoe lace was released in England. Until this time, shoes were mainly fastened with buttons, hooks and buckles.

The plastic tip of the lace is called an egglet or cap. Now they are made of plastic and perform practical tasks: they make it easier to thread through the holes, prevent the weave from unraveling on the lace. In the past centuries, on the contrary, the emphasis was on their decorative purposes. They were made of glass and metal (including silver and gold); it happened that from precious stones.

The most expensive shoe laces, worth $ 19,000 per pair, were made from gold threads by designer Colin Hart and only 10 pieces were released.

The creative Colombian artist Federico Uribe uses laces to make surreal paintings from the Shoe Laces series.
