Most often it determines only the length of the sole, as shoe manufacturers often produce shoes designed only for the “average” width of a person’s foot for economic reasons. Stops of the same length can have different widths.
Sizes of shoes range from 1 to 62. The usual sizes of adults are from 36 to 46, children's sizes are from 18 to 38, shoes for dwarfs are from 1 to 23, and giants wear shoes of 47–62 sizes.

type “C” - for legs with a narrow foot;
type “D” - for legs already normal;
type "F" or "Fx" - for normal legs;
type "G" - for stronger ("massive") legs;
type “H” - for full legs (wide feet with wide bones);
type “H 1/2” - for very full legs (very wide feet with wide bones).
